Pakistan and Maldives Agree to Establish Joint Working Groups in Key Sectors

Islamabad: Pakistan and Maldives have reached an understanding to form Joint Working Groups aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors. This agreement was made during a meeting in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema, and the Maldivian High Commissioner, Muhammad Thoha.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the two parties agreed to extend their bilateral ties in crucial sectors such as tourism, trade, labor, investment, and aviation. The proposal for creating sector-specific Joint Working Groups was put forth by Minister Cheema under the framework of the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Commission. The Maldivian High Commissioner welcomed the proposal, committing to send official representation for these groups in the near future.

Both sides also agreed to hold the inaugural session of the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Commission early next year. Minister Cheema emphasized Pakistan’s interest in exploring new cooperation avenues with the Maldives, inviting the Maldivian side to explore opportunities in Pakistan’s halal meat, agricultural products, fruits, and surgical instruments industries. The High Commissioner highlighted the strategic proximity between Karachi and Maldivian ports and expressed his determination to boost bilateral trade.

Furthermore, the discussions included the significant role both countries can play in regional and international forums, such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), particularly on issues like climate action. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties.
