Pakistan and UK Discuss Climate Cooperation and Regional Stability

Islamabad: The United Kingdom’s Minister at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Mr. Himesh Falconer, alongside a UK Parliamentary Delegation, met with Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, to discuss climate change and regional issues at the Parliament House. Speaker Sadiq emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and highlighted the country’s historic ties with the UK, proposing enhanced parliamentary and economic cooperation to strengthen these relations.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Speaker Sadiq stated that Pakistan has made significant sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism and consistently strives for regional peace. He asserted that lasting global peace requires resolving disputes in Kashmir and Palestine, expressing concern over human rights violations in these regions. He also highlighted the active role of Pakistan’s Parliament in national issues and its initiatives like the Sustainable Development Goals Secretariat and parliamentary caucuses for women’s and children’s rights.

The Speaker noted Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, despite being significantly affected by climate change, and called for international collaboration. Parliamentary Whips from various political parties underscored the importance of Pakistan-UK diplomatic relations. UK Minister Falconer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to its ties with Pakistan, announcing a £108 million aid package to address climate challenges, and pledged continued support for Pakistan’s democratic and economic development.
