Pakistan Calls for International Intervention to End Human Rights Abuses in Kashmir

Islamabad: Pakistan has called on the international community to assist in ending human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and to support a UN-sponsored plebiscite for determining the will of the Kashmiri people. The plea was made during a session of the General Assembly’s Third Committee, focusing on the longstanding conflict and the reported abuses including excessive force, enforced disappearances, and suppression of free speech.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Usman Jadoon, emphasized the documented abuses by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the region. He highlighted the urgency of international cooperation to facilitate the self-determination of Kashmiris through democratic means.

The discussions also addressed concerns over regional security, with the First Secretary in the Pakistani Mission to the UN, Sarfraz Gohar, accusing India of destabilizing activities. Gohar claimed that India supports terrorist organizations, such as TTP and BLA, which perpetrate attacks on Pakistani soil. He criticized India for escalating terrorism from a regional to a global threat and pointed out the systematic discrimination against Muslims in India, including hate crimes and persecution.

The statements from Pakistani representatives underscore the complexities of the Kashmir issue and the need for a multilateral approach to address the humanitarian and security dilemmas in the region.
