Pakistan elected to United Nations’ bodies

New York, April 25, 2014 (PPI-OT): Pakistan was elected to the key United Nations bodies at the elections held at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations on 23 April 2014. Pakistan was elected by acclamation to the Commission on Science and Technology for Development for the term 2015-2018 and the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations for the term 2015-2018.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development, established in 1992, provides the United Nations General Assembly and its Economic and Social Council high-level advice on science and technology matters, particularly their implications for development as well as advance understanding on science and technology policies, especially in respect of developing countries. Pakistan last served on the Commission from 2009-2012.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, established in 1946, considers applications of NGOs for consultative status to the United Nations as well as monitors the consultative relationship. Pakistan has maintained its membership of this critical Committee of the UN System. Pakistan’s new term for 2015-2018 will begin on the expiry of its current term of 2011-2014.

Pakistan’s election to important United Nations bodies will enable it advance national interests and continue playing the traditional constructive role in promoting matters related to the developing world’s socio-economic progress.
