Pakistan Intensifies Climate Efforts Amid Global Challenges

Islamabad: Pakistan is taking significant strides in addressing climate change, focusing on global collaboration through initiatives like the Paris Agreement and COP meetings, including the upcoming COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to climate action during a conference titled “Breathe Pakistan” held in Islamabad. The Minister highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national climate adaptation plans and advocate for a fair Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable nations.

Mr. Iqbal stated that Pakistan is determined to transition from being a victim of climate change to becoming a proactive architect of climate solutions. He underscored the nation’s leadership in climate adaptation and water conservation within the region, despite facing numerous challenges.

In recent years, climate-induced emergencies such as floods, heat waves, and droughts have affected more than 40 million people in Pakistan. Despite contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains one of the top ten most climate-vulnerable countries.

Mr. Iqbal also noted that the Ministry of Planning is integrating climate resilience into Pakistan’s national development agenda, guided by the 5Es Framework, which includes a focus on Environment and Climate Change.
