Pakistan Petroleum Limited Unveils Major Oil and Gas Find in Potwar Region

Karachi: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant oil and gas discovery at its Dhok Sultan-03 well in District Attock, Punjab Province. The discovery is a notable achievement for PPL and partner Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL), marking the second deepest oil find in naturally fractured carbonate in the Potwar region.

The discovery results from comprehensive geological, geophysical, and reservoir engineering analyses. These efforts optimized well design, overcoming drilling challenges, and reduced costs and drilling time.

PPL, operating the Dhok Sultan Block with a 75% working interest alongside GHPL’s 25%, initiated drilling on January 18, 2025. The well reached a depth of 5,815 meters, testing the Patala and Lockhart formations. The well yielded promising results, producing 1,469 barrels of oil per day and 2.56 million cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas at a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 1,147 psig on a 32/64″ choke. On a 48/64″ choke, it produced 2,113 barrels of oil per day and 4.13 MMscfd of gas at WHFP of 813 psig.

This discovery highlights the untapped hydrocarbon potential of the Potwar-Kohat sub-basin, unlocked by PPL’s advanced technologies and technical capabilities.

Imran Abbasy, Managing Director and CEO of PPL, stated, “This discovery is a testament to PPL’s in-house expertise, perseverance, and commitment to energy security. It demonstrates our ability to deliver impactful results that not only strengthen our reserves base but also contribute to reducing the country’s reliance on imported energy and conserving valuable foreign exchange.”

The Dhok Sultan-03 discovery is expected to enhance Pakistan’s energy mix by adding hydrocarbon reserves and reducing foreign exchange expenditure through local production.

PPL remains dedicated to exploring and developing Pakistan’s natural resources responsibly and sustainably, ensuring long-term value creation for the nation.
