Lahore: As China’s appetite for sesame seeds grows, Pakistan is set to become a crucial supplier of this agricultural commodity, according to the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI). During a think tank session at the PCJCCI Secretariat, President Nazir Hussain highlighted a significant 179.9% increase in Pakistan’s sesame exports to China from January to February 2025, rising from 5,997 metric tons valued at $10.1 million to 22,740 metric tons worth $28.27 million. By April 2025, exports soared to nearly 39,000 metric tons, valued at $48.6 million, marking a 337% year-on-year increase.
This growth, Hussain noted, is attributed to stronger quality control measures, improved trade facilitation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) frameworks, and efficient transit logistics. China, the world’s largest importer of sesame seeds, is turning to Pakistan as a reliable trading partner amid rising concerns over quality standards and food safety from traditional suppliers in Africa.
Brigadier Mansoor Saeed Sheikh (Retd), Senior Vice President of PCJCCI, emphasized the advancement of Pakistan’s sesame sector beyond basic commodity exports. Plans are underway to establish agro-processing clusters focusing on sesame oil, tahini, roasted snacks, and health food products near cultivation zones in Punjab, Sindh, and Baluchistan. These clusters are expected to generate numerous jobs within the agricultural value chain and support skill development in various fields.
Vice President Zafar Iqbal praised existing initiatives like CMEC-led sesame contract farming in Punjab, facilitated by advanced seed technology and traceability systems. He urged for scaling similar public-private efforts across the nation. With the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement Phase II in effect and tariff concessions in place, industry leaders are advocating for investments in post-harvest storage, cold chain systems, and export hubs.
Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General of PCJCCI, stressed the importance of uniting farmers, exporters, and policymakers to promote Pakistan’s sesame seeds globally, with China as a key market. The initiative aims to enhance yield, ensure traceability, and establish Pakistan as a premium supplier on the international stage.
