Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Indus Waters Treaty and Dispute Resolution

Islamabad: Pakistan has noted with utmost satisfaction the Court of Arbitration’s Supplemental Award handed down concerning Maximum Pondage. This award relates to the Indus Waters Treaty proceedings arising from the design disputes of the Ratle Hydroelectric Plant and the Kishenganga Hydroelectric Project.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Award affirms Pakistan’s central position that the Treaty places substantive limits on India’s water-control capability on the western rivers. The Award also strengthens Pakistan’s review rights, emphasizing the need for India to provide Pakistan with sufficient information and explanation to assess Treaty compliance.

Pakistan remains committed to the Indus Waters Treaty, its dispute-resolution procedures, and the peaceful settlement of water-related differences. The country views the Court’s decision as a reinforcement of its rights under the Treaty and a step towards ensuring continued cooperation and dialogue between the two nations on water management issues.
