Islamabad: The Ministry of Defense is highlighting the significance of sustainable agricultural practices through the 1st International Stakeholders Workshop on Industrial Hemp Value Chain. Organized by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) in collaboration with the Industrial and Medicinal Hemp Foundation of Pakistan (IMHF), this event will take place from January 15 to 17, 2025, bringing together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the developments, challenges, and opportunities within the industrial hemp sector.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, the UAF and IMHF have been working over the past four years to establish comprehensive value chains for the textile, food, and bio-composites industries, particularly through collaboration with international partners. Industrial hemp has been recognized globally for its sustainable and resource-efficient properties, offering environmental benefits through land and water stewardship and regenerative agriculture practices.
The recent approval of the Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority Act 2024 positions Pakistan to capitalize on this high-value crop, fostering industry growth and creating job opportunities across various sectors. The Act regulates the cultivation of the cannabis plant and the extraction, refining, manufacturing, and sale of its derivatives for medicinal and industrial use.
Industrial hemp’s versatility allows it to meet diverse market demands, ranging from textiles and food to paper, plastics, packaging, construction, and biofuels. Its remarkable carbon sequestration abilities will enable Pakistan to participate in the global voluntary carbon credit market.
The workshop aims to promote the industrial hemp value chain, enhancing agricultural productivity and contributing to the economic resilience of Pakistan. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this event, which represents a significant step forward in harnessing the potential of industrial hemp for the benefit of the economy and environment.
