Pakistan to Ratify UNESCO Underwater Heritage Convention, Leading in South Asia

Islamabad: Pakistan is set to become the first South Asian nation to ratify the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. This significant move was announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a meeting in Islamabad with UNESCO representative Dr Cristina Menegazzi.

According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting focused on collaborative efforts aimed at documenting, preserving, and promoting Pakistan’s underwater archaeological resources. Dr Cristina Menegazzi expressed support for Pakistan’s intention to join the global initiative to protect underwater heritage and highlighted UNESCO’s readiness to facilitate technical and scientific cooperation in this area.
