Islamabad: Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting, Barrister Danyal Chaudhry, has called for a shift in Pakistan’s drug policy towards a more compassionate and restorative approach. Speaking at the Reimagining Justice: Public Health and Human Rights-centered Drug Policy event, Chaudhry emphasized the need for a rehabilitation process for individuals exploited by drug traffickers.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, Chaudhry highlighted the absence of support systems for vulnerable individuals who unknowingly become involved in drug trafficking. He pointed out that these individuals often struggle to reintegrate into society due to a lack of rehabilitation programs.
Chaudhry acknowledged the CNSA 2023 Amendment as a step forward but noted its shortcomings in addressing issues such as prison overcrowding and drug addiction. He urged lawmakers to focus on harm reduction and gender-sensitive reforms, proposing actionable solutions for building a more equitable system.
“This is a serious issue, and Parliament must ensure practical reforms that heal society and restore dignity,” Chaudhry concluded, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive change in drug policy.
