Pakistan Urges Global Action on Kashmir Self-Determination Day

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has called for increased international intervention on the Right to Self-Determination Day for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. This commemoration marks the anniversary of the 1949 United Nations resolution that supports a plebiscite in the region.

According to Press Information Department, the Prime Minister highlighted the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiri people, who have yet to exercise their right to self-determination, despite international support. He urged the United Nations and the global community to take effective steps toward fulfilling these commitments. The statement also called for an end to human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the release of political prisoners, and the restoration of fundamental rights.

The Prime Minister criticized India for actions taken since August 2019 aimed at altering the demographic and political landscape of the region, actions he described as undermining the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistani government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people’s pursuit of self-determination, aligning with the United Nations Charter and international law.
