PDMA Sindh Enhances Heatwave Response Measures Across the Province

Karachi: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has reported significant progress in its ongoing efforts to manage the 2024 heatwave, with a series of initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of the high temperatures experienced from May to July. This includes the establishment of numerous heat stabilization camps and the implementation of widespread public awareness campaigns.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the PDMA and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) have been actively monitoring the situation under a well-coordinated Heatwave Response Plan. The Provincial Emergency Operation Centre of PDMA Sindh has been closely working with all DDMAs, District Emergency Operation Centres, and humanitarian partners to enhance readiness and response capacities.

A notable aspect of the response has been the establishment of 294 heat stabilization camps by 40 humanitarian partners in various districts, aimed at providing immediate relief to affected individuals. These camps have been crucial in the safe transportation and shifting of patients to Heat Stroke Centers and hospitals.

Moreover, extensive awareness initiatives have been launched, including the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, and the use of print, electronic, and social media to educate the public on the dangers of heatwaves. Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs have been regularly visiting these camps to ensure their effective operation.

Additionally, a Plantation Drive has been initiated by Deputy Commissioners and DDMAs in some districts as part of long-term environmental strategies to combat the effects of heatwaves.
