Peacekeeping Without Peacebuilding Cannot Sustain Peace: Asim

Islamabad: At the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has emphasized that peacekeeping efforts alone are insufficient to sustain peace without the integral component of peacebuilding.

According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad shared his insights while participating in the UN General Assembly Debate on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace. He stressed that transitioning from peacekeeping to peacebuilding, and ultimately to a development process led by the nation itself, necessitates ongoing political commitment, sufficient resources, and a well-coordinated effort from the global community.

Highlighting the significance of the Peacebuilding Commission, which was established two decades ago to assist countries in emerging from conflict by consolidating peace and preventing a relapse, Ambassador Ahmad pointed out the current challenges. He noted that there appears to be less peace to maintain and even less to build upon, accompanied by a growing competition for increasingly scarce resources. He urged for a comprehensive and serious assessment of the situation to fulfill the promise of effective peacebuilding.
