PM’s Climate Aide Stresses Water Conservation as Essential for Pakistan’s Future

Islamabad: Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, has emphasized the critical need for water conservation in Pakistan to ensure economic sustainability and resilience against climate impacts.

According to Press Information Department, Alam chaired a high-level meeting on the ‘Recharge Pakistan Programme’, highlighting the urgent necessity of water conservation due to the increasing unpredictability of riverine water flows and rainfall patterns. She addressed the compounded pressures of climate change, population growth, and inefficient water usage that threaten the country’s water security.

The meeting was attended by national and international experts in water conservation, climate change, and flood risk management. Alam underscored that the Recharge Pakistan Programme, set to launch on September 10, is a pivotal policy initiative aimed at building the country’s climate resilience through ecosystem-based adaptation. This program plans to utilize excess flood waters for replenishing water in wetlands, floodplains, and hill torrents, which will not only support water conservation efforts but also enhance flood risk management.

Alam called for widespread public participation in water-saving practices, urging citizens to adopt water-efficient technologies and practices in households, agriculture, and industries. She highlighted the significant role of efficient water management in preventing ecosystem degradation and supporting economic sectors like agriculture and industry, which are vital for the country’s economy.
