President Approves 180-Day Sentence Remission for Eligible Prisoners

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved a special remission of 180 days in sentences for eligible prisoners under Article 45 of the Constitution on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him). This decision reflects a sentiment of mercy and compassion associated with the blessed occasion.

According to Radio Pakistan, the decision was taken on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Federal Cabinet, who initially recommended a 100-day remission. However, after thorough consultation, the Prime Minister agreed with the President’s proposal to extend this remission to 180 days.

The special remission will be applicable to prisoners who meet the prescribed criteria under the law. However, individuals convicted of serious crimes such as murder, terrorism, espionage, and major financial offenses will not be eligible for this remission.
