Prime Minister for closer economic cooperation between Thailand and Pakistan

Islamabad, January 11, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan and Thailand enjoy close and cordial relations with convergence of views on many international issues.

This was stated by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Thailand, Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House this morning. The Prime Minister, recollecting the visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to Pakistan in March 2012, said that the people of Pakistan were greatly pleased by her visit.

Recalling his meeting with the Prime Minister of Thailand in Laos and Kuwait last year, the Prime Minister expressed the hope that trade relations and economic cooperation between the two countries would be further enhanced.

The Prime Minister also appreciated the role being played by Thailand for Pakistan to become a Full Dialogue Partner in ASEAN. The Prime Minister thanked the Thai Deputy Prime Minister for extending him an invitation to visit Thailand and asked him to convey to the Prime Minister of Thailand an invitation to visit Pakistan.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the government and the people of Pakistan on behalf of people and government of Thailand for the warm welcome extended to Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The Deputy Prime Minister also appreciated the financial assistance extended by Pakistan to Thailand during the floods in 2011 and informed the Prime Minister that the area has been fully rehabilitated.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that Thailand and Pakistan enjoy excellent relations and close cooperation which were based on solid foundations.

His delegation, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand said, is looking forward to holding discussions with Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Mrs. Hina Rabbani Khar, to further enhance the trade and bilateral relations with Pakistan, the volume of which is presently around US $1 billion.

The Thai Deputy Prime Minister also informed Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf that he would be meeting prominent business leaders of Pakistan tonight to explore avenues of cooperation.

Appreciating the invitation extended to Thai Prime Minister, Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul said that dates of her visit to Pakistan would be decided between the two countries on mutually convenient time through diplomatic channels.
