Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s strong and ongoing support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), emphasizing the country’s commitment to backing their quest for self-determination in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in his statement marking ‘Kashmir Black Day’ on October 27, 2024, Prime Minister Sharif recalled the arrival of Indian forces in Srinagar 77 years ago, marking the onset of challenges that have stifled the Kashmiri people’s aspirations for autonomy. He criticized India for not fulfilling its obligations under international law, particularly the relevant UN resolutions.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the enduring hardships faced by Kashmiris under Indian occupation, from arbitrary detentions to severe restrictions on their daily lives. Despite these challenges, he noted, the Kashmiri resolve for freedom remains unshaken.
“This day, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the sacrifices made by the Kashmiri people in their continued struggle for the right to self-determination. Undoubtedly, their sacrifices will not go in vain,” stated Sharif.
He condemned the recent policies and actions by India aimed at altering the demography and political landscape of IIOJK, asserting that such measures cannot quell the Kashmiris’ desire for self-determination. He underscored the broader regional implications, asserting that peace and stability in South Asia hinge on the just resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the will of its people.
“As I recently reaffirmed in my address to the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan has consistently maintained that peace and stability in South Asia remain contingent upon peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiris. India must realize that it cannot suppress the genuine aspirations of the Kashmiri people by its coercive tactics,” Sharif added, calling on the international community to play a more active role in resolving the conflict.
