Islamabad: The Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, has urged the adoption of rigorous policy measures to address vehicular emissions that contribute to the country’s worsening smog issue. This call to action emerged during the 10th meeting of the National Climate Change Policy Implementation Committee (NCCPIC), as detailed in a press release from the climate change and environmental coordination ministry.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the meeting, chaired by Tarar, highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle smog, which poses significant health risks and economic challenges across the nation. The meeting underscored the necessity for government organizations to act decisively to curb air pollution.

Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, presented progress updates on the National Climate Change Policy 2021. She emphasized advancements in renewable energy initiatives, with the government aiming for a 30 percent renewable energy share by 2030. Moriani noted the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), supported by incentives such as tax exemptions and reduced customs duties, as part of efforts to reduce transport emissions.

The meeting’s participants, including representatives from various federal and provincial bodies, agreed on the need for mandatory vehicle emission standards. They discussed the enforcement of nationwide emissions standards, including compliance with Euro-5 or higher levels, to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions.

Imran Ahmed, Director General (Oil) at the Petroleum Division, provided insights into the fuel quality standards in Pakistan. He noted that while petrol meets Euro-5 standards, local diesel production falls short, contributing to poor air quality. Ahmed stressed the importance of upgrading local fuel refineries to align with regional standards.

The meeting concluded with a directive to expedite the approval of a New Energy Policy to promote EVs and hybrid vehicles, including mass transit systems, as part of a broader vision for a cleaner and healthier Pakistan.
