Protest against imposition of toll tax

Srinagar, May 08, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, traders and transporters continued their protest for the second consecutive day, today, against the ruthless Indian government’s decision to levy toll tax on all types of vehicles plying on Srinagar-Jammu highway.

The protesting traders and transporters assembled outside the office of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad and staged protest against the India’s latest anti-Kashmiri move. A memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on the occasion said that the decision would add to the worries of the Kashmiri people, who are already suffering from a shattered economy. The toll is being collected by India’s National Highways Authority in Sangam area of Islamabad district.

The Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement in Srinagar, today, strongly condemned the imposition of toll tax on Jammu-Srinagar highway. He said this move will choke the economy of Kashmir and trigger crisis in the valley.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement issued after being discharged from a Srinagar hospital, felicitated Muslims on the commencement of holy month of Ramadan. He said besides fasting, Ramadan also teaches its followers to look onto overall social wellbeing of the society.

A delegation of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir led by Rafiq Ahmed Owasi, visited the SMHS hospital in Srinagar to enquire about the health of the youth, injured in Indian forces’ action during anti-India protests in Pulwama and Shopian. The youth were protesting against the killing of freedom activist, Muhammad Lateef Dar and his associates by Indian troops during an operation in Shopian district, last Friday. Hurriyat leader, Farooq Ahmed Tawheedi, visited Dogripora area of Pulwama to express solidarity with the family members of Lateef Dar.

Clashes between youth and the Indian troops took place in Rathsun area of Tral after Indian forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation in the area. The troops also launched an operation in Gohan area Baramulla district.

Two pharmacists identified as Irfan Ahmad and Muzaffar Ahmad were injured after unknown gunmen fired on their shop in Zainapora area of Shopian district, today.

The two-day signature camp titled ‘One Million Signature Campaign’ aimed at creating widespread awareness on Kashmir issue has concluded at a central street in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. The camp was organized by the Kashmir Council Europe. A large number of Irish people took interest in the campaign and placed their signature to express solidarity with the oppressed people of occupied Kashmir. The KC-EU Chairman, Ali Raza Syed on the occasion urged the international community particularly the United Nation and the European Union to prevail upon India to stop human rights abuses in the occupied territory.
