Protests Erupt in Jammu Over Civilian Death Allegedly Caused by Police

Jammu: Tensions escalated in Jammu following the death of 27-year-old Shubam Sharma, who reportedly died due to police brutality. A forceful protest broke out in the Bantalab locality, where residents voiced their anger against the Indian police and demanded justice for the deceased.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sharma was involved in a casual game of cricket near his home when the incident occurred. Local police, conducting a search operation in the area, allegedly detained Sharma and subjected him to severe physical abuse. He was later taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His death has ignited protests, with demonstrators blocking main roads and expressing their grief and outrage through anti-police slogans.

The demonstrators, including Sharma’s family and friends, are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. Shivani Sharma, the victim’s sister, described her brother as the sole breadwinner for their family, working as an electrician. The family’s demand for justice underscores the community’s broader concerns about police conduct and accountability in the region.
