Rana Tanveer Hussain Leads Sugar Advisory Board Meeting in Islamabad, Discusses Sugar Stock and Export Proposals

Islamabad, In a pivotal meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board chaired by the Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, key government and industry representatives gathered to deliberate on Pakistan’s sugar stocks and potential export strategies. The meeting, aimed at ensuring local sugar supply meets demand before exploring export opportunities, involved discussions on stabilizing sugar prices and managing the supply chain effectively.

According to Ministry of Industries and Production, the session included the Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, and Federal Secretary for Industries and Production, Mr. Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, alongside other high-ranking officials and stakeholders from the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA). The primary focus was on reviewing the current sugar stock and considering a proposal by the Pakistan Sugar Manufacturing Association to export surplus sugar, contingent upon fulfilling domestic needs.

During the discussions, it was suggested that any decision to export sugar should be linked to price stability in the local market. A mechanism is proposed to be developed between the government and the PSMA to ensure price stability. Furthermore, the meeting underscored the importance of gathering authenticated data on sugar stocks from provinces and evaluating the expected sugar production from beet before making any final decisions regarding exports.

The next meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board is scheduled to reassess the situation and review updated data before making any recommendations on the export of sugar, which is crucial for preventing adverse impacts on domestic prices and food inflation, particularly affecting the low-income segments.
