Jammu: Katra, the base camp for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Reasi district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, remained closed for the sixth consecutive day as residents continued their protest against the policies surrounding a proposed ropeway project.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the strike, led by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, has immobilized daily life in the town. Businesses, including shops and restaurants, have shuttered, and vehicular traffic has been suspended as part of the protest.
The Samiti initiated the protest on December 25, demanding the cancellation of the Rs 250-crore ropeway project and the release of 18 members detained during previous demonstrations. The protest has escalated with five individuals embarking on a hunger strike, urging the release of the detainees.
Opponents of the ropeway project claim it could negatively impact local livelihoods and interfere with the traditional pilgrimage route.
