Seminar Explores Link Between Climate Change and Violent Extremism in Karachi

Karachi: A seminar on ‘Climate-induced Social Fragmentation and its Link to Violent Extremism’ was organized at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) University, Karachi. The event was jointly organized by Press Information Department’s Media Cell for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) and PID Karachi, which brought together students, faculty, media professionals, and researchers as part of the series ‘Understanding Disinformation and its Digital Spread.’

According to Radio Pakistan, the discussion highlighted the interconnected challenges of climate change, social vulnerability, and extremism in Pakistan. Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Professor at the University of Karachi, Dr. Aamir Alamgir, said recent research in Karachi showed that floods cause immense mental distress. He suggested integrating climate resilience with community rehabilitation programs to reduce socio-psychological triggers of extremism.

Director General PID Karachi Erum Tanveer urged better coordination between climate and interior ministries and highlighted individual reflection, climate adaptation, and inclusion as essential for resilience against extremism.
