Senate Committee Reviews Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway Project and Governance Concerns

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, led by Senator Quratulain Marri, convened today at Parliament House to discuss the progress of the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway M-6 project and scrutinize the governance of the Ministry’s Policy Board.

According to Senate of Pakistan, during the meeting, the Ministry of Communications provided updates on the M-6 project, highlighting interest from Chinese partners and its potential inclusion in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) pending discussions at the upcoming Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting. Senator Marri expressed concerns regarding the composition and operation of the Ministry’s Policy Board, which she labeled as a “High-Powered Board” established on an arbitrary basis.

The committee underscored the need for transparent selection criteria for Board nominations, reflecting a broad spectrum of society to guide the ministry effectively on critical issues. The Secretary for the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Awais Manzur Sumra, and other senior officials were present to address these governance issues, with the committee ultimately recommending the establishment of clear rules and standard operating procedures for the Policy Board’s conduct.
