Senator Mushahidullah Khan says carbon emission reduction roadmap ‘still being finalised’

Islamabad, June 22, 2015 (PPI-OT): Taking serious note of the news item published in various newspapers regarding Pakistan’s position on volunteered national carbon emission roadmap, the Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Mushahidullah Khan, has clarified that no decision has been taken as yet as far as the plan for reducing national carbon emissions is concerned.

“The news item, published in various English and Urdu daily newspapers has incorrectly published that Pakistan plans to reduce carbon emissions 30 percent by year 2025,” the minister said and added, ”

He further clarified that the federal climate change ministry was still working on drawing up its national road map for reducing national carbon emissions, which is also called ‘Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), for submission to the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat before global climate agreement by the end of this year.

However, the final recommendations are still being finalised, the minister added. Mushahidullah Khan said that being among the lowest emitter of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions in the world, Pakistan is ranked at 135 in a global list of carbon emitting countries thought the world. Yet, the country’s vulnerability to adverse impacts of climate change is likely to intensify considerably in the coming decades.

The climate change minister says that this is a serious issue and the present government is aware of the global developments around climate change and importance of the UN-led climate negotiations. “The country is actively involved in a very constructive fashion in these ongoing climate negotiations,” Senator Mushahidullah Khan highlighted.
