Sindh Government asked industrialists to help in cleaning the city

Karachi, October 16, 2019 (PPI-OT): Mr. Roshan Shaikh, Secretary Local Government Sindh visited SITE Association of Industry to promote the special initiative of Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali `Say No to Open Littering’. He informed that CM has ordered provincial ministers to monitor different areas during the campaign. He has also directed to keep Deputy Commissioners’ busy for expediting the tasks of disposing off garbage. “The chairman of all union councils should own the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness in the areas which are cleared by the provincial authorities.”

He briefed the Members of the Association that as per the CM’s initiative up till now more than 358,000 tons of garbage has been lifted from Karachi and sent to landfill site. Daily 14,000 tons are now being picked from all districts of Karachi, excluding Cantonment Boards areas. The biggest problem is backlog of more than 800,000 tons.

He said that government is an executing agency but citizens have the responsibility to demonstrate civic sense and keep their homes, compounds, vicinity and the city at large neat and clean by disposing off the trash properly. He asked industrialists to help Sindh Government in cleaning of their own city.

Mr. Zubair Motiwala Patron of SITE Association welcoming the Secretary, briefed the situation of SITE industrial area. He informed that due to lack of cleanliness in SITE industrial area SEPA is issuing notices on the basis of garbage accumulation as SITE Limited, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and Chinese Company fails to perform their jobs. He also pins pointed the infrastructure especially road conditions in SITE Karachi.

He floated the idea before the Secretary Local Government that if the property and conservancy tax collected from SITE Karachi is handed over to SITE Association they would construct all the roads and bring the area with international standards. He also highlighted the issue of over staffing, gratuity and pension issues of SITE Limited which almost take the 90 percent of the total income.

Mr. Suleman Chawla, President SITE Association of Industry, Mr. Saleem Parekh and Mr. Jawed Bilwani, Past Presidents shows their grievances over garbage accumulation and lack of cleaning in SITE – the largest industrial area, said that due to non-performance of SITE Limited, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Chinese contractor company Hangzhou Jinjiang, heaps of garbage are increasing day by day in SITE Area.

Mr. Suleman Chawla stated that several meetings have been held with SITE Limited, SSWMB and Chinese Contractor Company but the result is zero as there is no system to lift the garbage on regular basis. SITE Limited has also failed to lift debris of nala due to which industrialists are facing difficulties and on the basis of nala waste dumped outside the industries. President raised the question why industries are being penalized when the concerned departments are not performing their duties?

Secretary agreed with the views of industrialists and assured his support in accumulation of funds. He also issued instructions including the removal of encroachments, removal of GTS on main roads, especially at Manghopir road in front of technical college and at Mominabad area.

He also said that there are many industries in SITE for throwing garbage outside their factories, and the people should be restricted to follow the rule to not throwing garbage on roads. He said that the industry would be sealed if trash found in front or on its connecting roads. Industrialists must place dustbins outside their factories. Managing Director SITE Limited, Mr. Zubair Pervaiz Ahmed, DC West, Mr. Fayyaz Alam Solangi and Chairman DMC West, Mr. Izhar Ahmed Khan also attended the meeting.
