South Sudan Islamic Council discusses ways to help flood victims in Aweil state

Secretary General of the South Sudan Islamic Council (SSIC) Sheikh Abdallah Burj on Tuesday discussed with Governor of Aweil State Tong Akeen Ngor, ways to provide relief assistance to the flood victims in the state.

They also discussed the situation of the large number of Muslims who were affected by the flash floods that destroyed more than 10,000 homes and inundated more than 100,000 acres of farmlands.

During his visit to the SSIC headquarters, the state governor asked for humanitarian aid including foodstuffs, medicine, shelter materials, mattresses and clothing among other things for those affected by the floods.

The meeting was attended by representatives of SSIC’s partner organizations including the Islamic Dawa Organization in South Sudan; the World Relief, Care and Development Organization; and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

The participants stressed the importance of moving quickly to the affected area to identify the needs of the victims. SSIC Secretary-General Sheikh Abdullah Burj appealed to all humanitarian organizations and charitable foundations, especially the international Islamic organizations, to lend a helping hand to the affected area, in order to show the image of tolerance and philanthropy in Islam.

The state governor expressed appreciation of the Muslim community and the South Sudan Islamic Council for their warm hospitality and generosity, which reflects the advancement of Muslim society in many spheres.
