Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Industries and Production expressed deep concerns over the CEO of K-Electric’s repeated absences from scheduled meetings and called for immediate action on the implementation of minimum wage for workers in Export Processing Zones. The Committee underscored the importance of maintaining Utility Stores for affordable public access.
According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the Standing Committee convened under the leadership of Syed Hafeezuddin, MNA, in Islamabad’s Parliament House. The Committee reaffirmed the government’s commitment to keeping Utility Stores open, stressing their role in providing low-cost goods to citizens. It urged authorities to adhere to this commitment and requested the concerned Minister and Secretary to attend the next meeting for direct discussions.
The Committee voiced strong displeasure at the CEO of K-Electric’s absence from four meetings. It emphasized that the CEO’s non-attendance hinders parliamentary oversight and the Committee’s work on public welfare. A formal note of displeasure was recommended, along with summoning the CEO to the next meeting. The Committee is also contemplating a privilege motion to address this lack of cooperation.
Concerns were also raised about the failure to implement the government’s minimum wage directive for workers in Export Processing Zones. The Committee instructed the Export Processing Zones Authority to enforce the Rs. 37,000 per month wage promptly and report on their progress.
The meeting saw participation from various MNAs, senior officials from the ministry, and other attached departments, aiming to address these critical issues comprehensively.
