Imphal: Manipur’s political and security situation has reached a critical point as the National People’s Party (NPP) pulled out of the BJP-led government, citing a complete failure to manage the ethnic violence that has gripped the state.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the turmoil has led to the imposition of curfews, internet suspensions, and a significant escalation in public unrest.

The NPP, led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, expressed deep concern over the government’s inability to restore normalcy. In a letter to BJP president JP Nadda, the NPP condemned the administration of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, stating it had lost the people’s trust. Despite this setback, the BJP is expected to maintain a majority with 32 MLAs, supported by six JD(U) legislators, five from the Naga People’s Front, and three Independents.

Meanwhile, the situation intensified after the recovery of the bodies of five family members. Two children and an elderly woman were found dead on Sunday, adding to tensions after previous discoveries of a tribal woman’s body and the killings of 10 alleged militants.

Protests have surged, with mobs ransacking BJP and Congress offices in Jiribam and setting fire to the homes of MLAs across the state. The ancestral residence of a BJP MLA and the property of an Independent legislator in Jiribam were vandalized. Attempts to storm Chief Minister Biren Singh’s ancestral house were foiled by security forces.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah canceled his Maharashtra tour to convene an emergency meeting in New Delhi. CRPF Director General Anish Dayal was dispatched to oversee security measures in Imphal. Civil rights groups, including COCOMI, have issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding action against militants and the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

Former Chief Minister Ibobi Singh warned of potential mass resignations by legislators if the violence remains unchecked, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.
