Terrorism Linked to Economic Improvement in Pakistan, Says Mian Zahid Hussain

Islamabad, Mian Zahid Hussain, Chairman of the National Business Group Pakistan and former provincial minister, has voiced concerns regarding the correlation between economic improvement and the rise of terrorism in Pakistan. Hussain highlighted that terrorists target the economy, particularly when the country begins to experience favorable investment conditions.

According to Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF), Mian Zahid Hussain, while addressing the business community, pointed out that economic decisions by foreign countries, institutions, and investors are significantly influenced by the IMF's opinions and economic ratings. He noted that an improvement in Pakistan's international ratings often coincides with a resurgence of terrorism, disrupting investment and economic progress.

Hussain emphasized that the government, military, political parties, and other institutions are aligned in their economic approach, positively impacting the national situation. However, the recent surge in terrorism poses a serious threat to this progress and is deemed harmful to Pakistan's interests.

The business leader also acknowledged the positive impact of efforts by the caretaker government and the army in reducing smuggling, hoarding, and illegal activities, which have eased the economic burden. He pointed out that the improved investment environment and serious interest from foreign investors have been jeopardized by renewed terrorist activities aimed at damaging Pakistan's image and investment initiatives like the SIFC.

Hussain also raised concerns about the safety of Chinese interests in Pakistan, which have been frequent targets of terrorism. He called for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of foreign investments and to bring the country out of economic difficulties. Hussain expressed hope that the SIFC would attract foreign investors and believed that quick decision-making and efficient operations could be game-changing. He concluded by stressing the need to counteract the tactics used by Pakistan's enemies, including terrorism and political turmoil, to divert foreign capital away from the country.
