Traders threaten to launch protest against Federal Board of Revenue raids on businesses

Islamabad, April 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): The local traders in a meeting chaired by Ajmal Baloch, Central Organizing Secretary, Traders Action Committee passed a resolution calling upon the Federal Board of Revenue to stop conducting raids on business setups otherwise, they will launch strong protest movement against such initiatives of the tax department.

They demanded necessary amendment in the Sales Tax Act to make it just and fair as its mandatory requirement for sales tax registration is unbalanced and in violation of basic rights.

The said that Federal Board of Revenue field formations are creating harassment in the business community by conducting raids on the premises of business set ups which is totally uncalled for and badly hurts the self-respect of the traders, who are playing an important role in improving the economy.

Addressing the meeting, Ajmal Baloch said that businessmen are not against enhancing tax net and have always cooperated with FBR for tax collection. But conducting raids on the business setups are not wise moves as such initiatives have created lot of harassment and resentment in the business community.

He said the approach of PML(N) government was quite business friendly, but such initiatives of FBR officials are tarnishing the image of the government as well as enhancing trust deficit between taxpayers and tax collectors. He called upon the Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar to look into these matters and direct FBR to desist from such moves as these will further damage the image of the government.

He said very soon a convention of Rawalpindi and Islamabad business community will be convened to discuss such uncalled for moves of Federal Board of Revenue and to launch a strong protest movement to protect the self-respect of businessmen.
