Islamabad: U.S. Ambassador Cameron Munter and Secretary Waqar Masood, Ministry of Finance Economic Affairs Division, signed a Letter of Agreement between the United States and Pakistan to continue U.S. support for ongoing Border Security, Law Enforcement, Judicial Reform, and Counternarcotics activities with an additional $110 million in support for 2012.
“U.S. assistance has helped improve the skills of hundreds of Pakistani prosecutors and police, provided protective equipment to thousands of police officers on the front lines of fighting extremists, and constructed hundreds of kilometers of roads in previously isolated parts of the border provinces,” Ambassador Munter said.
For more than 30 years, the United States has provided assistance to Pakistan as part of the Department of State’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement program. Programs supported in the 2012 program include:
Law Enforcement Reforms and Capacity Building: Training for 7,500 police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan, and Sindh, as well as female police from across the country; uniforms, protective equipment, vehicles, and communications equipment for 9,000 police.
Counternarcotics: Programs supporting counter-narcotics efforts, including poppy reduction and development for alternative crops. Nationwide support for private and government drug treatment centers and anti-drug campaigns.
Rule of Law: Programs to support trial advocacy training for Pakistani prosecutors to strengthen judicial reforms, prosecutorial services, and counter-terrorism efforts, as well as to promote police and prosecutor collaboration.
Corrections Administration and Training: To support training of corrections managers, senior wardens, and mobile training teams in Pakistan in order to improve prison administration as well as to support vulnerable groups in prisons, including women, juveniles, the infirm, and the mentally ill.
Aviation Support: For the 50th Air Wing Squadron and its operating locations to expand law enforcement aviation operations in KP and FATA in order to improve monitoring of borders to intercept militants, drug traffickers, and other criminals.
