UK asked to play role in easing Kashmiris’ miseries

London, January 24, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre London has urged Britain and the Labour Party to play an active and effective role in ameliorating the sufferings of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl in a letter written to the British MP and leader of the Labour Party, Edward Miliband, who is also Leader of opposition in the British Parliament said that the Kashmiris had yet to determine their political future by exercising their right to self-determination as per the United Nations charter and UN resolutions.

Reminding his speech which he delivered at an event hosted by Islamic Cultural Centre, Professor Shawl said, “Like me hundreds of other community leaders, Muslim intelligentsia and members of parliament listened to your crisp, articulate and visionary remarks.

It is this vision of truth, which drives me to write these few sentences to remind you that in your speech a reflection of the pain of my people, the people of Jammu and Kashmir was missing and that their pain is also part of the collective pain of the global brotherhood.”

“They expect you and Her Majesty’s government to play an active and effective role in ameliorating the sufferings of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, suffering since the partition of India into two independent dominions, India and Pakistan. Kashmiris have yet to determine their political future by exercising their right to self-determination as per United Nations charter and UN resolutions,” Shawl wrote.

“We hope you would reiterate and reassure us of your support to the determination of Kashmiri aspirations and the resolution of this oldest dispute on the United Nations agenda. I believe that the providence of the United Kingdom and its diplomatic input can help in developing a constructive engagement between India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir. And it is my firm belief that this engagement will strengthen regional and international peace in south Asia,” he added.
