UN Expresses Concern Over Civilian Deaths and Media Restrictions in Burkina Faso

Geneva, The United Nations Human Rights Office has voiced alarm over reports of significant civilian casualties, including children, in the Yatenga and Soum provinces of northern Burkina Faso amid ongoing conflicts between armed groups and national forces.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, spokesperson Marta Hurtado highlighted the challenges in verifying these incidents due to restricted access but emphasized the urgency of investigating these serious allegations. The UN is calling on Burkina Faso’s transitional authorities to conduct thorough, impartial, and effective investigations to ensure accountability and uphold the victims’ rights to truth, justice, and reparations.

Hurtado also criticized the temporary suspension of at least two international media outlets, which had reported on the violence. She stressed the importance of media freedom and civic space, particularly in Burkina Faso’s transitional context, underscoring that freedom of expression and access to information are critical for societal trust and cohesion.
