UN resolutions provide solution to Kashmir dispute

Srinagar, January 05, 2013 (PPI-OT): The veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, has said that the UN resolutions provide the best solution to the Kashmir dispute. Syed Ali Gilani addressing a seminar “Right to self-determination: democratic and durable solution” via telephone from New Delhi urged India to give up its rigid and unrealistic policies and take serious and solid steps for peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute.

The seminar was organised by Gilani’s forum and it was presided over by Hurriyet leader, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai.

Syed Ali Gilani said that Kashmir dispute could be settled through implementing the UN resolutions but India’s obduracy had been an obstacle in achieving this objective. He appealed to the international community to put pressure on New Delhi to settle the dispute in accordance with the relevant UN resolution and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He added that permanent peace in the region was impossible without settlement of the lingering dispute.

Other speakers including Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, Muhammad Shafi Rashi and Muhammad Sahfi Lone in thief addresses said India itself had taken the dispute to the UN and on January 5, 1949, the World Body had adopted a resolution promising the Kashmiris that they would be given their right to self-determination, but unfortunately the commitment was yet to be honoured.

They said that the dispute over Kashmir was main hurdle in cordial relations between Pakistan and India. They maintained that Pakistan had always supported settlement of the Kashmir conflict according to the UN resolutions and will of Kashmiri people but New Delhi was creating obstacles in its peaceful resolution. They reaffirmed the Kashmiris’ pledge to continue their struggle till complete success.
