Srinagar, March 15, 2014 (PPI-OT): Kashmiri representative, Ishtiyaq Hameed, has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to use its influence to persuade India to settle the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiri people.
Ishtiyaq Hameed addressing the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva said that the right to self-determination of people was a fundamental right and was guaranteed under the international law. It is also embodied in the Charter of the United Nations, International Covenant on civil and political rights and international covenant on economic, social and cultural rights, he added.
He said that human rights were universal, inalienable, inter-dependent and inter-related. He deplored that the crimes of over seven lac Indian troops against the people of Kashmir had reached an alarming proportion, presenting the worst example of state-sponsored terrorism.
Ishtiyaq Hameed said that the Indian troops were enjoying unbridled powers under the black laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Public Safety Act and Disturbed Areas Act in the occupied territory. All this is happening in flagrant violation of the whole range of core human rights instruments and in continued disregard of the UN resolutions, he said.
