United Kingdom firm to assist Karachi Metropolitan Corporation generate electricity from garbage: Administrator

Karachi, June 05, 2013 (PPI-OT): KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi has said that study under a comprehensive plan for generating energy from garbage was being conducted which would be completed in three months so that along with disposal of garbage on scientific method it could be used for valuable objectives in this connection technique of developed countries would be utilized.

He said this during a meeting with British Consulting Company’s Consultant Richard Cook. On this occasion Sr. Director Municipal Services Dr. Shaukat Zaman, Chief Engineer, Contract Management Khalid Masroor and other officers were present.

Administrator Karachi said that energy was being generated from garbage in developed countries and those countries have built an integrated and effective system of Solid Waste Management in their big cities which has produced best results. Garbage over 10 thousand ton generated per day in Karachi and 8 to 10 thousand people were working for lifting of garbage and putting out profitable products in its recycling non-systematically.

He informed that garbage from 6 cantonment boards and 18 towns was collected on primary and secondary level and KMC shifts this garbage to its three landfill sites on daily basis. He said that recent study with reference to Solid Waste Management considering increasing population and expansion of industrial areas in Karachi aimed at making such effective Solid Waste Management System in which garbage should be lifted on immediate basis and used for generating energy.

British Consultant Richard Cook during the meeting informed about details of study of Solid Waste Management System and emphasized on its value and importance. He discussed about possibilities of generating energy from garbage and said that a comprehensive report in light of study being conducted in this regard should be prepared which could attract foreign investors for investment in this sector in Karachi.

He also informed about preparation method of report and its various aspects and said that these methods were being followed by various developed countries in which garbage was being used for generating energy after collection of garbage in a better way.

Afterwards British Consultant Richard Cook informed Municipal Commissioners of District Municipal Corporations in the meeting about study program and gained information about nature and disposal methods of garbage collected in various areas. On this occasion all District Municipal Commissioners ensured their full cooperation in Solid Waste Management Program.

Administrator Karachi said the study having period of three months should be completed as soon as possible. He directed officers to ensure their full guidance and support for Consulting Company so that this comprehensive report could complete soon and a comprehensive and integrated system of Solid Waste Management could be built.
