Karachi, July 23, 2014 (PPI-OT): U.S. Consul General Michael Dodman attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Naheed Super Market (NSM), today. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is working with NSM for an in-store promotion of American agricultural products offered in Pakistan. Over the next five days, NSM will showcase a wide variety of U.S. agricultural products.
“The opportunities for trade are truly endless,” said Consul General Dodman. “American exporters see huge potential in Pakistan’s rapidly growing domestic market, and there is also great potential for Pakistani exporters.”
America, said Mr. Dodman, has a comprehensive halal food products market. “Our country’s 2.6 million Muslims spend $20 billion on Halal food products annually,” he said. “I hope that Pakistani families enjoy the wide range of American products offered here today at Naheed Supermarket and at other grocery stores around Karachi.”
The United States remains one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners and its largest export market; agricultural products account for a significant portion of that trade. During the last five years, U.S. exports of agricultural and related goods to Pakistan increased 24.6 percent, growing from US$293 million in 2009 to US $389 million in 2013. While Pakistan maintains a healthy trade surplus with the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Commerce seek to increase opportunities for U.S. exports.
“We are very proud to be working with Naheed Super Market,” said Clay Hamilton, Agricultural Counselor at the U.S. Embassy. “Whether part of a traditional Pakistani meal or something uniquely American, I am sure that our products will find a welcome spot at the Iftar table.”
