Years on, family of killed youth awaits justice in IHK

Srinagar, March 23, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, despite being proved by the Home Department of the territory and police that Indian army’s Assam Regiment was directly involved in the cold-blooded murder of a 12th class innocent student from Soitang, Srinagar, the Defence Ministry of India is not according sanctions to prosecute nine troopers including an officer of the said regiment.

“We have been waiting for the nod of Defence Ministry of India from last six years. But under the garb of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), killers are roaming free. Even the Home Department of Kashmir in its letter to Defence Ministry has clearly maintained that my son Javed Ahmed Magrey was killed in cold blood,” father of slain youth, Ghulam Nabi, said in a media interview.

He said that the Home Department of the territory in a letter dispatched to Joint Secretary Government of India, Ministry of Defence, New Delhi clearly stated that after thorough investigation it was proved that Javed Ahmed was killed by Assam Regiment after kidnapping.

Javed Ahmed was kidnapped from his room by the Indian troops of 119 Assam Regiment during the intervening night of 30th April and 1st May, 2003 and later killed in a fake encounter. Later, a magisterial enquiry also declared the deceased as innocent person who was killed by the officials of Assam Regiment.

A Home Department letter to Defence Ministry of India had called for accord of sanction for launching prosecution in case. However, Javed’s mother, Amina Bano, told media that they were still waiting for the justice.
