Youth Dies from Alleged Police Torture in Tripura, Sparked Protests

Agartala: A 26-year-old man died at his residence following alleged torture during police custody in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Tripura state, as per officials.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the man, identified as Badal Tripura, was arrested on theft charges in Sabroom, South district. Authorities confirmed that he died after suffering mistreatment while in police custody.

Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nityananda Sarkar confirmed that five police personnel stationed at Manubazar police station have been detained after a complaint was lodged by the victim’s family, who claimed that the death resulted from torture inflicted by two policemen and three special officers.

Following the news of the youth’s death, angry locals staged a protest outside the Manubazar police station, demanding severe punishment for the officers allegedly responsible. Protesters also blocked the Agartala-Sabroom highway.

A case has been registered against the five detained officers in response to the complaint, as per the SDPO.

Meanwhile, unrelated incidents were reported from other parts of India. In Bengaluru, a 41-year-old man was killed by his wife before taking his own life, police said. Additionally, four people were killed and several others injured in a multiple vehicle collision on Jewargi road in Kalaburagi, Karnataka.
