Benazir Income Support Programme’s mechanism based on transparency: British envoy

Islamabad, November 01, 2012 (PPI-OT): The transparent methodology employed by Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to provide innovative solutions are highly appreciable as it has enabled the programme to serve the people in an effective manner. H.E. Adam Thompson, British High Commissioner in Pakistan said during a meeting with Federal Minister and Chairperson BISP Madame Farzana Raja here at BISP Secretariat on Thursday. Mr. Alexis Ferrand, Economic Advisor Economic Growth Group, DFID was also present during the meeting.

Besides other areas of mutual and national interests, Waseela-e-Taleem (Right to Education) programme of BISP came under detailed discussion during the meeting which is basically aiming at promotion of education in general and imparting education to the children from poor families in particular. The scheme is in line with Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the year 2015 regarding Universal Primary Education.

Earlier, Madame Farzana Raja informed the visiting High Commissioner that the Programme has already launched its scheme aiming to promote education among the underprivileged segments of society. She said that 3 million children from beneficiary families of BISP are to be enrolled in schools under the scheme.

Chairperson BISP said that ensuring basic education of male and female children is an indication of healthy society. She said that BISP is committed to promote education in the country beside its various initiatives to curb poverty and to uplift the living standards of poor population of the country.

Madame Farzana Raja on the occasion acknowledged the contribution of British Government and DFID regarding support for this particular scheme as well as valuable contribution in other initiatives in the social sector of Pakistan.
