Karachi, July 21, 2015 (PPI-OT): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed the Irrigation Department to set up emergency control rooms at Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages and also at Sindh Secretariat to keep an eagle eye on the minute to minute flood developments.
This he said while presiding over a review meeting of flood situation in Sindh just after returning from Khairpur today. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Siddique Memon, Principal Secretary to CM Alamuddin Bullo, Senior Member Board of Revenue Syed Mumtaz Shah and additional secretary Irrigation other concerned officers.
Giving details of the water position, the chief secretary Siddique Memon said that at Guddu 353361 cusecs discharge has been recorded at upstream while downstream discharge is 32,6177. At upstream Sukkur Barrage the discharge is 269560 cusecs and downstream 214030 cusecs while at Kotri Barrage the upstream discharge is 69563 cusecs and downstream discharge is 28868.
He said that on July 21, upstream Guddu Barrage was expected at 345,000 while downstream would be around 365,000 cusecs. “It is a low flood even then necessary measures have been taken,” he said and added that on the chief minister’s directives the senior Irrigation officers, including secretary were on the embankments.
Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah directed the irrigation department to set up control rooms at all the three barrages and in at the irrigation department to keep abreast of minute to minute flood developments.
He also directed the chief secretary to issues directives to the deputy commissioners of all the districts, except Karachi to make necessary arrangements for shifting of the residents of katcha area to safe places. “The katcha areas of River Indus have started flooding, therefore shifting of people and their belonging are necessary,” he said.
CM TAKES NOTICE OF KEENJHAR INCIDENT
Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah taking notice of drowning of two Karachiites in Keejhar while bathing has expressed sorrow and serious displeasure on the rescue arrangements. The chief minister directed the chief secretary to seek report from the deputy Commissioner Thatta and report him with his comments. “Why divers were not resent there and what was the rescue arrangements may be indicated in the report,” he said.
DIPLOMATS, BUREAUCRATS CALL ON CM
Three diplomats of Bangladesh, Iran and Indonesia called on chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and extended him Eid greetings at CM House today. The senior officers, including chief secretary Siddique Memon, Senior Member Board of Revenue Mumtaz Shah, Home Secretary Mukhtiar Soomro and secretaries of other departments also came to extend Eid greetings to chief ministers.
