Cloudburst and Lightning Strike Cause Tragedy in Kashmir

Srinagar: A cloudburst in the Bandipora district of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) triggered flash floods that wreaked havoc on infrastructure, while a separate lightning incident in Kulgam claimed the life of a young boy.

According to Kashmir Media Service announcement issued on 16 August 2024, the floods caused by the cloudburst affected Arin and Dardpora villages in Bandipora, damaging footbridges, retaining walls, and crops. An official detailed that the sudden floods also led to significant water logging, impacting several homes in the area and blocking the vital Bandipora-Gurez road.

In a related yet tragic event, a 16-year-old boy was killed and two others were injured in a lightning strike in the Damhal Hanjipora area of Kulgam district. The incident occurred in the Bangward Bala area, where local police and civil administration teams responded quickly to conduct rescue operations.

The deceased was identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Chouhan, with the injured including Rafakat Ahmad Chouhan, both sons of Mohammad Hussain Chouhan from Bangward Bala.

The twin disasters highlight the vulnerability of the region to natural calamities and their devastating impact on communities.
