Country needs to enhance gas supply to various sectors: Dr Asim

Islamabad, August 17, 2012 (PPI-OT): Dr. Asim Hussain Advisor to the Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources has said that the country needs to enhance gas supply to various sectors and in this regard is pursuing the LNG import project.

He said this while chairing the first meeting of the Committee on LNG Infrastructure Projects constituted by the Prime Minister, that was also attended by other committee members including Minister Water and Power, Secretary Finance, Secretary Water and Power, representatives of Ministry of Law and Justice, Mr. Gohar Ejaz, Mr. Razak Dawood, Mr. Ahsan Bashir Chairman APTAMA and senior officers of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources.

The committee members were briefed on the LNG import project and the previous decisions of ECC on the issue. Detailed discussions were held on the framework for import of LNG including Fast-track Imports and the Long Term Import components. Committee Members unanimously agreed that LNG import projects are necessary keeping in view the current energy crisis in the country.

The committee was of the view that SNGPL – SSGC joint venture company should be established with major shareholding of the Federal Government that should undertake the infrastructure development for the LNG import. Moreover, it was also recommended that the import initiatives already undertaken by SSGC are to run parallel to infrastructure development so that LNG could be imported as early as possible.
