Disputed status of Kashmir remains unchanged

Srinagar, March 27, 2016 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyet Conference has said that Indian Parliament’s resolutions cannot affect the internationally-recognized disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir. The APHC spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar ridiculed the assertions made by a BJP leader, Dr. Jitender Singh, that the Indian parliament had passed a resolution in 1994 declaring Kashmir as integral part of India.

The spokesman said that neither the Indian parliamentary resolutions had any worth vis-à-vis Kashmir dispute, nor had the people of Kashmir accepted the forcible occupation of India over the territory. He termed Dr. Jitender Singh’s statement as untrue and baseless and pointed out that the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir was strongly supported by several resolutions passed by the United Nations.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar condemned the use of brute force by Indian police on peaceful protesters in Srinagar. Several protesters, mostly women, were injured when police resorted to the teargas shelling on protesters in Maisuma and Koker bazar areas of the city. They were protesting against the limited ration quota under the inhuman National Food Security Act.

Senior Hurriyet leader, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi addressing a function in Srinagar played glowing tributes to prominent Kashmiri martyrs Ishfaq Majeed Wani, Jalil Andrabi, Dr Abdul Ahad Guru and Shabbir Siddiqui.

The High Court Bar Association through a unanimously-passed resolution at a function held in Srinagar asked India to release all illegally-detained Kashmiris including Masarrat Aalam Butt, Dr Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo and Muhammad Shafi Shariati from jails. The Bar said that the cases of many political detainees were being delayed on one pretext or another to prolong their detentions.

On the other hand, the student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Umar Khalid, who is facing sedition charges, in an interview in New Delhi said that he and his other university colleagues were fearing attacks by Hindu extremist groups. He deplored that speaking of freedom had become a crime in India. In reply to a question Umar Khalid said he does not think it is seditious to say that Kashmir issue needed to be settled.
