Doctors call off strike after meeting Sindh Governor

Karachi: After the Lady Health Workers (LHWs), the doctors in the province met with the Sindh Governor, Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan, and called off their strike.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Governor Sindh late yesterday evening. He said that the delegations of the Sindh Doctors Welfare Association and All Pakistan Lady Health Workers Employees Association separately called on Governor Sindh at the Governor House.

Sindh Health Minister, Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mumtaz ur Rehman, Health Secretary, Hashim Raza Zaidi, Deputy Commissioner Karachi South, Mustafa Jamal Kazi, were also present on the occasion.

The Governor urged the concerned officials to pay salaries of LHWs within a week. He assured the LHWs that their problems would be resolved and in this connection talks are being held with the federal government officials. It was pointed out that the department of Lady Health Workers has not yet been devolved to the province and because of this such a problem has arisen.

The Governor said that he would try to get LHWs’ services regularized in three months time. The Lady Health Workers Programme is active since 1994 and has a prominent place in the health sector. The effort of the government is that this programme should continue with consistency so that its benefits could reach the people at grassroots level.
