DPM Calls Upon UNSC to Implement Resolutions on JandK

Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has called upon the UN Security Council (UNSC) to implement its resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. The call was made by him in a letter to the President of the UN Security Council.

According to Radio Pakistan, the letter expresses grave concern over the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). It highlights issues such as arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and restrictions on freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. The letter also criticizes the continued application of draconian laws in the region.

The letter further draws attention to the ongoing detention and persecution of Kashmiri political leaders, including Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Yasin Malik, and Asiya Andrabi, as well as journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders, and civil society activists. It notes the restrictions on sixteen political organizations that represent the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Highlighting the implications of the Indian actions for regional peace and security, the Deputy Prime Minister warned that India’s increasingly aggressive posture, inflammatory rhetoric, and the deployment of an estimated 700,000-900,000 security personnel in IIOJK have heightened tensions. Additionally, India’s illegal and unilateral decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance has increased the risks to peace and stability in South Asia.
