Embassy of Pakistan in Washington D.C. Celebrates New Cohort of Global UGRAD Students

Washington D.C.: The Embassy of Pakistan has warmly received 54 students selected for the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for the fall 2024 semester. This program underscores the educational and cultural exchange between Pakistan and the United States, providing full scholarships for students from underrepresented sectors in Pakistan to study at various U.S. universities.

According to Embassy of Pakistan – Washington D.C., the event was attended by notable figures including Karene Steiner from the South and Central Asia Press and Public Diplomacy Office, Teresa Mastrangelo, Senior Program Officer for South and Central Asian Fulbright Programs, and Michael Dyer, Senior Project Director at the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). Representatives from the U.S. Department of State and IREX were also present to welcome the students.

Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Dr. Fareha Bugti emphasized the importance of the Global UGRAD program in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between the two nations. She praised the diversity of the student group, which includes 37 women and 17 men from various regions of Pakistan, attending 48 host institutions across 29 states.

The program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and implemented by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and IREX, aims to enhance academic and leadership skills while promoting cross-cultural exchanges. Over 2,500 young leaders have benefited from the program since its inception, playing a crucial role in building people-to-people connections.

During their remarks, Karene Steiner and Teresa Mastrangelo congratulated the students on their selection and encouraged them to fully engage with their host communities, acting as ambassadors of Pakistan. The students shared their aspirations to gain new skills that will contribute to Pakistan’s development upon their return.
