Srinagar, December 01, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a team from Jammu and Kashmir Commission for Women which Thursday visited Srinagar Central Jail to look into the charges of harassment of women visitors by Indian paramilitary personnel, has found that the women inmates are harassed too.
“During our visit to the Central Jail, we came to know that female prisoners are frisked in a harassing manner by CRPF women after they are taken back to jail after court trials,” the Commission’s Chairperson, Shamima Firdous, who is also member of the so-called Kashmir Assembly, told mediamen.
“This type of harassing behaviour by the jail authorities curbs the freedom of the women and leads to mental torture. This behaviour is totally unacceptable in the eyes of law,” she said.
The jail inmates started protest last week when a woman visitor to the jail was made to strip by the CRPF personnel during frisking.
Meanwhile, a four-member team of High Court Bar Association (HCBA) visited the Jail to get information about the harassment of visitors.
“After interviewing inmates, we came to know about many shocking things that are taking place there,” HCBA General Secretary, Mohammad Ashraf Butt, told mediamen. “We will come up with a detailed report soon,” he said. Besides Butt, the team included Bashir Ahmed, Bilal Ahmed and Hameed Shafi.
